The Classic Dungeon

After seeing a YouTube review on Board Game Bollocks about the Dungeon board game I thought I'd drag my old copy out of the cupboard for a spin. I have the "Classic" edition with the enormous board and choice of 6 character classes and decided to play with the expert rules.

My opponent took up the Paladin figure and I went for the Warrior and we were off. Both of us quickly emptied the 1st level with the Paladin finding the Secret Door treasure. After a few rooms in second level the Paladin slid down a trap into 3rd level and from there headed to the 4th level to try his luck. The Fighter knowing that any healing from the Paladin was now far away, headed to the 3rd level to battle around the healing chamber in the north of the board.

The Paladin took a couple of wounds from enemies but used his healing power to recover and even dropped down another shoot to 5th level! Meanwhile the Fighter had found a magic sword and was mopping up enemies in the 3rd level area and was moving across to the 4th level for the last few treasures to win the game and head back to the stairs. The Paladin headed north clearing a few 4th level rooms on the way to try and intercept him before ambushing the Fighter in the right hand Level 1 corridor. Alas the dice were not with him and after the Fighter took the Paladin's most valuable treasure he sprinted to the stairway to win.

Even though this game was first made in 1975 is a total dice rolling luck-fest I still had a barrel of fun with it. I think with more players greater tactics would come into play as there are only so many treasures to go round. As each character has different victory conditions and abilities you have to weigh up taking on the easier levels or heading for the murkier depths and greater risk and reward. Overall a great rules-lite dungeon delver for when the rain is hammering down and you don't want to get bogged down in a rulebook.
